Brant Food for Thought
Brant United Way helps students learn.
In 1998, Brant Food for Thought began supporting Student Nutrition Programs in our community. Student Nutrition Programs provide a well-balanced snack or meal to students in schools. Often, people question the impact of a well-nourished breakfast on a child. The proven success of these programs speaks for itself. Proper nutrition affects behavior, memory retention, absenteeism and tardiness.
Teachers witness firsthand the positive effects of student nutrition programs in their school communities every day. One principal of a 5-day a week breakfast program explains, "Students come in cranky and we feed them. The more we run this program, the more I realize that many behavior problems are food-related. It's not that it fixes everything, but it sure helps".
One particular program recorded a 23% decrease in absenteeism in one month and a 35% decrease in absenteeism in the next month. Children are able to learn better because of the Student Nutrition Programs provided by Brant Food for Thought.
A school secretary of a 4 day a week morning program said that, "the attendance councilor had noticed an improvement in the overall attendance at their school ever since the morning meal program began". As a secretary and mother, it feels good to know that no student here goes hungry and that healthy snacks are being introduced to students who might not otherwise be aware of the best snacks to eat for energy and learning".
A child's education is the building block to their future. Brant Food for Thought's Student Nutrition Programs are crucial to the growth and success of today's youth and tomorrow's future. Brant United Way believes in building support, success and hope for ALL members of our community.
We're in this together.
