Brant United Way helped Alex and Riley become healthy and energetic children.

In 2009, a Alex* and Riley* walked through the front doors of the YMCA, a Brant United Way Member Agency. Although they continued to come on a regular basis to participate in the programs and services that were offered, some YMCA staff noticed that both children were very quiet and kept to themselves. They were not socializing with the other children much and appeared tired and quite reluctant to participate. One staff member in particular, Maureen* (Program Coordinator), paid special attention to their behavior and decided to help. Maureen gradually started speaking with the children and after some time she slowly started earning their trust.

When it was clear that the children had begun to develop confidence in her, Maureen invited the children to participate in the Breakfast Program and the after school snack program held at the YMCA in partnership with Brant Food for Thought (another Brant United Way Member Agency). In introducing the children to these programs, Maureen was hoping that it would improve the children’s demeanour and energy levels. Within a couple of weeks YMCA staff noticed that both brother and sister were happier, more energetic and excited to participate in the programs and services. Today, both children continue to actively participate in YMCA programs and have developed positive and healthy relationships with staff and other participants.

Brant United Way works closely with the YMCA and other Member Agencies in the community to provide programs and services that will support and encourage children and adults alike. Together, we need to rediscover what it means to be a community and continue to work together to provide opportunities such as this one, for our fellow citizens.

Together, we can make a difference in our community.
